lascaux-salletaureaux

In the year 1993 she began to collect unicorns. In the beginning there where only five unicorns with wings or Pegasus with horn. This combination: unicorn with wings where hard to find, that holds back collecting unicorns for a long time. In 2011 I went to a temporarily exhibition into a castle in  ’s Heerenberg, about “Into the trail of the unicorn” by Willem Gerritsen. This  changed my way of looking on my collection unicorns and the “real” unicorn is mostly seen without wings. In the meantime the collection is over 400 items and is now to follow on INSTAGRAM UNICORNMUSEUM.

The exhibition will include grafics, art, prints, books, antiques, cards, toys, unicornmugs, figurines and statues, clothing, shoes, musicboxes, globes, jewelry and a lot more unicorns from all over the world with information over  unicorns such as:

and why everything to collect of unicorns?

To start with the why unicorns? They intrigue me. They have a elegancy, they have a bright pure appearance, but most of all they have magic and love.

The word unicorn is from Latin and excist of two parts: Unus (one) and Cornu (horn). The most of us doe see the unicorn as a mythical creature of our imagination, but in history the unicorn is often pictured as a true living being and there are a lot of stories about unicorns; new ones about creatures of nature, but there are also many real old stories. These were the proves that unicorns are real for me.

Unicorns are with us from the beginning. You can find the oldest proof of the existance of unicorns by the cave drawing out of stone age, like they were found in Lascaux in  France, does have images of horses with horns on their forhead. These treasures date from more than 12000 years ago.

In the art of the Greek and Roman period there are plagues of goddess Diana and her carriage pulled by a several unicorns and at a bronze medal from 1447 is shown a halfnaked woman with unicorn and a sickle-shaped moon, what also leads to goddess Diana with her chastity.

Before the Greek, unicorns and white horses had taken place at the Kelts, in the fight between King Oak (summer) and King Holly (winter), like the sun and the moon. From Midwinter rules King Oak, who symbolizes the birth of the sun, the growth and the fertility in nature. After midsummer, when the growth stagnates will King Holly take over his place. The sun means also the selfconsiousness and the strength in the physical body. The unicorn represents the same consiousness, but without the physical body and only in the spirit.
Also is this seen into the fight between dragon and unicorn or later from the Middle age in the fight between the lion, what stands for the material powers of the King or Queen against the unicorn, with his spiritual power; here to read power from the church.

In the Bible before 1734 the unicorn was mentioned more than once, but in modern bibleversions the unicorn disappeared totaly on the authority of the council.

So as you can see in the portrait of a young woman, Galleria Borghese in Rome. Till half 20st century she looks like the saint St. Caterina with her right hand on a wheel. An arthistorian discovered in 1935, that the painting must be by Rafaello Sanzio (1483-1520) and that parts of it has be repainted roughly. There was chaste a scarf painted around het shoulders, in latest years of the 17st century. When the painting was cleaned they discoverd a lovely tender baby-unicorn lying down on her belly. This beautiful unicorn was like others hidden and forgotten.

In de paintings of Jheronimus Bosch (1450-1516) the unicorn occurs regularly. At the paradisepanel “Garden of delight” (1480-1490) is painted, a unicorn drinking water out of a lake and two unicorns with riders between the many animals and “fantasy beings”. Was it his imagination or did he see more?

In books of beasts from the middle ages was written: a unicorn is a small and extraordinary intelligent. No hunter will be able to catch it! Or mayby a foolish boy who has wasted his treasure could have advance hunt for some big wild.

maagd met eenhoorn

Virgin with unicorn (1605) is a famous artwork by Annibale Carracci (1560-1609)
You only can catch a wild unicorn by setting a trap with a young virgin deep in the forest. The unicorn will be under the spell of purity of her soul, the unicorn will lie down its head in her chest. Later in time, they claimed ‘re’em as the word unicorn entered the Bible through a simple translation mistake.

Inasmuch the unicorn directly is known as a phallussymbol in paintings, graphics and scultptures and so the Christian church took also this interpretation. This is shown at the tapesteries that began with “the wild hunt begins” and by using dogs to guide them tot he uncorn, is “the unicorn found” on the second tapestery. At the thirth “the unicorn has been followed”, and in the next stage “the unicorn has been inclosured an has defending itself”. The fifth of the seven tapestries has been cut into pieces, by a reconstruction is this hanging about betrail to be saved from their sins. At the sixth they brought the killed unicorn to the castle. Christian writings interpret the unicorn and its death as the “passion of Christ”. The pagan version is about mislead lovers, where the unicorn had be a bridal treasure to give fertility. At the last one is the unicorn no longer death, and is captured in the garden of thousend flowers, with a necklace from marriage, solidarity and loyalty. The fresh wounds are by love and no loger from blood, but now it is juice from ripe pomgranates.

“Unicorn in captivity” (1495-1505)  is one of the seven individual hangings known as "The Unicorn Tapestries." They are the most beautiful woven and complex works in fine wool and silk with silver and gilded threads of art from the late Middle Ages made in the South-Netherlands, that survive, located now in The Cloisters in New York.

At land there wasn't any unicorn to see in real, but because of tales from fishermans, that they've seen mamals with unicornhorns, gave the unicorn a new appearance, a unicorn with a fish tale.

Nharwals on a prent from wood engraving in 1890
Because of there wasn’t any real affidence of their existance, two doctors Andrea Marini and Ambroise Paré wrote an essay, late 16th century, that the expensive unicornpowders impossible could be from real unicorns.

So the unicorn was erased by the sience and later on out of all modern versions of the Bible. The unicorn was deleted and forgotten. Only childern and unicornbelievers does have a change to see the unicorns.
And ofcourse as we all know now, Yes they sold unicornpowders and unicornhorns didn’t come from the real unicorns. These tagilble products are from narwhals. Male narwals do have a long sensitive twisted left tooth to "taste" the concentrations of different chemicals in the water.

But what if… The unicorn does have withdraw and made themself invisible and from our normal view. Unicorns does have a higher energy-vibration then ours and live in a other dimension. You also might say, that we are blinder people now. Like Eskimo’s have more sight for the colours white, because their white polar-habitat. Hunters in woods can see much more sorts of green and mediums can pick up more fine-energies in the aura’s. Unicorns are still visible through widening our sight, for example by meditation or by an unicorn-initiation.…So you can really see and meet unicorns

But why they here? Unicorns do come here, just like other spirits of nature more often to guide us humans, animals , trees, plants and other kind of living, in these diffecult times of the Earth. They are stepping forward from the invisible world, to give us support, unconditional love and healing. They are the symbol of innocense, brightness, purity and tenderness by heart. Sometimes the light of them will shine so bright out of the heart, that the unicorn do have wings; the Peagasus. The unicorn-horn is full with healing energy and pure magic.
